‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Trailer: Wes Anderson Returns With a New Cast of Characters, Twisted Family Ties, and His Signature Flair
Focus Features
Wes Anderson is back with another visually eccentric and narratively playful feature, and this time it’s The Phoenician Scheme. The just-released trailer introduces audiences to a story centered on a wealthy industrialist and his nun daughter — all delivered in Anderson’s trademark symmetrical frames and wry tone.
Del Toro, Threapleton Lead an Ensemble as Unusual as Ever
Benicio del Toro stars as Zsa-zsa Korda, a powerful and eccentric European tycoon whose fortune and legacy come under pressure. Mia Threapleton co-stars as his daughter, Sister Liesel, a reclusive nun whose quiet world collides with her father’s larger-than-life persona. Michael Cera plays her academic tutor, adding another layer of Andersonian awkwardness to the dynamic.
The cast also features some of Anderson’s go-to collaborators and new additions: Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Shot in Germany, Scored by Desplat, and Co-Written by Coppola
The Phoenician Scheme was filmed on location in Germany and co-written by Anderson and longtime collaborator Roman Coppola. The film’s score, composed by Alexandre Desplat, promises another whimsical yet haunting backdrop to match Anderson’s stylized world.
POPULAR ON THE CINEMA GROUP
The director once again teamed up with producers Jeremy Dawson and John Peet through American Empirical Pictures, alongside Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush, which also backed Moonrise Kingdom and Asteroid City. Focus Features will handle distribution, marking yet another chapter in their ongoing partnership with Anderson.
A Director Known for Looking Forward, Not Back
Though his style is instantly recognizable, Anderson has repeatedly said that he doesn’t focus on reinforcing his own visual signatures. “I never think about my voice when I’m making a movie,” he explained in 2023. “It’s about building something new every time, working with collaborators who push the story in surprising directions.”
Still, fans will instantly recognize the elements that make his films so singular — controlled chaos, ornate production design, and a strange emotional clarity buried beneath the absurdity.
The Phoenician Scheme is set for a limited theatrical release on May 30, with a wide expansion to follow on June 6.
