Jennifer Aniston will portray a manipulative stage mom in the upcoming Apple TV+ series adaptation of I’m Glad My Mom Died, based on Jennette McCurdy’s bestselling memoir.

Apple TV+ is bringing I’m Glad My Mom Died to the screen, and Jennifer Aniston is taking center stage in one of her boldest roles yet. The streaming platform has greenlit a 10-episode dramedy based on iCarly star Jennette McCurdy’s explosive memoir, with Aniston set to play McCurdy’s overbearing mother in a story that’s equal parts heartbreaking and darkly funny.

The official logline describes the show as “a heartbreaking and hilarious recounting of Jennette McCurdy’s struggles as a former child actor while dealing with her overbearing, domineering mother.” The story centers around the intense, codependent relationship between a rising teen star and the narcissistic mother who sees herself as the real celebrity.

McCurdy, who stepped away from acting after a turbulent experience in the industry, has since gained critical acclaim for her memoir, published in 2022 by Simon & Schuster. The book became a cultural sensation, topping the New York Timesbestseller list and staying there for over a year. Now, she returns to television behind the scenes as co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Ari Katcher (Ramy, Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show).

The creative team behind the show is packed with powerhouse names. In addition to Aniston’s Echo Films, producers include Sharon Horgan and Stacy Greenberg of Merman, Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara for LuckyChap (the team behind Barbie), and Jerrod Carmichael and Erica Kay. Apple Studios will handle production.

The project marks a significant expansion of Aniston’s relationship with Apple TV+, where she already stars in and executive produces the hit series The Morning Show, set to launch its fourth season this fall. Her performance in the series has earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, making this new collaboration another high-profile move for the actress.

For McCurdy, this is a full-circle moment: from child star to bestselling author and now, creator of a show that reclaims her own narrative. The series will provide a raw, nuanced portrayal of the toxic dynamics behind the curtain of fame—a theme resonant for a generation of performers shaped by parental ambition and Hollywood’s darker corners.

No casting has been announced yet for the young actress who will portray the McCurdy-inspired lead. Filming and release dates have not been disclosed.
